Toronto Family Halloween Photoshoot | The Fun Is in the Dress‑Up

oronto family Halloween photoshoot A collage of themes from Mary Poppins to Adams Family capturing memories from 2017 through 2025

Every autumn since 2017, I’ve had a special date on my calendar: a Halloween photoshoot with a family that treats October as an invitation to create, imagine, and make unforgettable memories. Each year, a different family member chooses the theme. Mom then sources materials and hand‑crafts the costumes. Props are gathered, the dog is bribed, and a few years in the cat became a beloved addition—and I get to be a part of it all with my camera while the magic happens.

Keep reading to see the themes I’ve captured from 2017 through 2025 (we skipped 2020 due to the pandemic).

Mary Poppins Family Halloween Photos in Toronto (2017)

It began as a simple idea—dress up, play, and pose—and became one of my favorite annual traditions to photograph. Each year I watch a young girl explore new worlds with her parents as her anchor, fully immersed in character. One year they’re fairy‑tale royalty in the woods, the next they’re comic‑book heroes. The specifics change, but the spirit doesn’t: play, joy, and friendship.

Sleeping Beauty (2018)

What I appreciate most isn’t only the outfits (though they’re wonderful) or the locations (always drenched in autumn color). It’s the effort. The late‑night sewing sessions. The thought about how to transform each family member into the character they will embody. The way Mom and Dad say yes—yes to silliness, yes to imagination, yes to being fully present for their daughter.

The Wizard of Oz (2019)

It shows in the photos—that brilliant, never‑before‑seen glow when families create something together.

Catwoman, Wonder Woman, and Superman (2021)

I’ve watched their daughter grow from toddling in striped tights to striking confident poses, and every year her smile says the same thing: “My parents show up for me.” Photos are paper and pixels, but they’re also proof—proof that you were there and that you made memories on purpose.

Aladdin (2022)

If you’ve ever wanted to start a family tradition, consider this your nudge. Pick a theme. Pick a day. Show up, even imperfectly. Wear the cape, the wig, the silly shoes. Let your child choose the soundtrack. Get grass stains, laugh too loud, and take the picture. Five, ten, fifteen years from now, these will be the moments that glow.

Alice in Wonderland (2023)

To my client and her family: welcome back, year after year, to share your beautiful make‑believe. Your daughter will have a treasure chest of memories because you chose to create them—not by accident, but with intent and love. Here’s to traditions that grow with our children, to costumes that never quite fit back into their boxes, and to the laughter we bring when we arrive—together.

X‑Men Family Halloween Photoshoot (2024)

For the X‑Men shoot we incorporated smoke for the first time and it was so fun to play with.

This year, we brought back smoke—this time black—for the Addams Family and set up lights on our usual forest trail to create a darker, spookier vibe. I love how it turned out. What do you think?

How to Plan Your Family Halloween Photos

  • Pick a theme together: Let your child lead—buy‑in = better smiles.
  • Choose the right time: Golden hour gives flattering, glowy color.
  • Plan simple props: One or two per person keeps hands busy and poses natural.
  • Dress for movement: Comfortable shoes and layers for fall temps.
  • Include pets: Bring treats and a helper so we can time the perfect shot.
  • Embrace imperfection: Laughter and spontaneity are the magic.
