Have you ever looked at a photo of yourself and immediately thought:
“I don’t look like that.”
“I hate this picture.”
“Why do I look so much older?”
“I’m just not photogenic.”
If you have ever felt this way, you are not alone.
This is one of the most common things I hear from women before their portrait sessions.
Many women walk into my studio feeling nervous because they believe they are the problem. They believe they are not comfortable in front of the camera, they do not know how to pose, or they simply do not photograph well.
Often, these feelings become stronger as we move through different stages of life.
Maybe your body has changed. Maybe you have gained weight. Maybe you look in the mirror and notice signs of aging that you were not expecting. Maybe you spent years being the person behind the camera, capturing memories for everyone else, and suddenly realize there are very few beautiful photographs of you.
But here is what I have learned after photographing so many incredible women:
Most women do not dislike themselves. They dislike the way they have learned to see themselves in photographs.
And there is a very important difference.

We have all experienced it.
Someone quickly takes a photo of us, we see it, and our heart sinks.
We notice everything we do not like:
And then we make a very human mistake.
We assume that one image represents the truth of how we look.
But a photograph is only one fraction of one second.
It does not capture your kindness, your confidence, your humour, your warmth, or the way the people who love you see you.
It captures a moment.
And moments can be influenced by so many things:
Even the most beautiful people in the world can take an unflattering photograph.
That does not mean they are not beautiful.
It simply means the photograph did not tell the whole story.
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is:
“I’m just not photogenic.”
Many women believe being photogenic is something you are either born with or you are not.
But that is simply not true.
Being comfortable in front of a camera is a skill. Feeling confident in photographs is something that can be created through guidance, encouragement, and the right environment.
Most people are not models.
They do not naturally know:
And they should not be expected to.
That is the photographer’s job.

One of the most powerful moments during a portrait session happens when a woman sees herself differently for the first time.
She realizes:
“This is how my family sees me.”
“This is how my friends see me.”
“This is who I really am.”
Because often, we are much harder on ourselves than the people around us.
We focus on imperfections while others see:
A beautiful portrait can become a bridge between the way you see yourself and the way others already see you.
And that realization can be incredibly powerful.

When Abby joined my 40 Over 40 project, she wanted to be part of something bigger than a photoshoot.
She was drawn to a project created to celebrate and empower women—women who had lived, grown, experienced challenges, and entered a new chapter of their lives.
Like many women, Abby carried years of beliefs about herself that had been shaped by other people’s opinions.
She had experienced hurtful comments about her appearance throughout her life, and those messages influenced the way she viewed herself.
Before her session, she wondered what the photographs would reveal.
Would she recognize herself?
Would she like what she saw?
Then came the reveal.
When Abby saw her portraits for the first time, the moment was extraordinary.
She cried tears of joy.
She saw herself as elegant.
She saw herself as beautiful.
She saw a version of herself she had not allowed herself to believe existed.
The photographs did not create a new Abby.
They revealed the woman who had always been there.
She left feeling transformed—not because she became someone else, but because she finally saw herself through a kinder and more loving lens.
Many women believe a photoshoot will feel uncomfortable.
They imagine standing stiffly in front of a camera, unsure what to do, hoping for one good image.
That is not how a professional portrait experience should feel.
A great portrait session is guided, relaxed, and personal.
My role is not simply to take photographs.
My role is to help you feel comfortable enough to show up as yourself.
During your session, I guide you through every step.
I coach posing throughout the entire experience.
I guide:
Small adjustments can completely change how confident and natural an image feels.
You do not need to know how to pose.
You just need to show up.
A forced smile rarely creates a meaningful portrait.
Instead, I focus on capturing a range of expressions and helping you discover what feels authentic.
Every woman has expressions that tell her story.
My goal is to capture the version of you that feels genuine.
The camera can feel intimidating when you feel like you are being judged.
That is why creating comfort is such an important part of my process.
During your session, there is always conversation.
I am talking with you, giving direction, asking questions, sharing stories, and creating an environment where you can relax.
I also love incorporating music into the experience and ask each client what they would enjoy listening to while being photographed.
The goal is not perfection.
The goal is connection.
Many women worry about what to wear.
Before your session, we discuss wardrobe choices and what will photograph beautifully.
I usually recommend bringing at least two outfits so we can create different looks while making sure you feel confident and comfortable.
Your clothing should support how you want to feel in your photographs.
Almost every woman who steps into my studio begins with a reason why she believes she will not look good in photographs.
But those reasons are often based on old photographs, negative experiences, or years of being overly critical of herself.
The women who are the most nervous before their session are often the ones who surprise themselves the most.
They do not leave because they suddenly became photogenic.
They leave because they finally see what was already there.
Many women wait.
They tell themselves:
“I’ll do photos after I lose weight.”
“I’ll wait until I look better.”
“I’ll do it when I feel more confident.”
But confidence does not always come before the experience.
Sometimes confidence is created because of the experience.
This chapter of your life deserves to be celebrated.
Your story deserves to be seen.
You deserve photographs that reflect the woman you are today.
Your photographs are more than images.
They are reminders.
A reminder of your strength.
A reminder of your journey.
A reminder of the woman you have become.
If you have spent years avoiding photographs because you do not love the way you look in them, perhaps the answer is not to hide.
Perhaps the answer is to finally see yourself through a different lens.
Because the right photograph has the power to change the way you see yourself.
And that is where confidence begins.
Many people dislike photos because they see themselves differently than they are used to seeing themselves in the mirror. A single photograph captures one moment, expression, and angle — it does not represent your entire appearance or who you are.
Absolutely. Being photogenic is not something you are born with. With professional guidance, flattering lighting, and authentic expressions, anyone can create photographs they love.
Most women feel this way at the beginning of their session. A professional photographer should guide you through posing, expressions, and movement so you never feel like you are guessing.
No. Your life is happening now. You deserve to celebrate yourself at every stage. The right photographer will help you create images that highlight your confidence, personality, and beauty.
Natural portraits come from connection. A comfortable environment, thoughtful direction, genuine expressions, and a photographer who understands you all contribute to creating images that feel authentic.
The Ellahrika 40 Over 40 Experience was created to celebrate women entering a new chapter of life — women who want to reconnect with themselves, embrace their confidence, and create portraits that reflect who they truly are.
If you are ready to see yourself through a different lens, I would love to help you create that experience.
